Event: Flood Warning
Sender Name: NWS Juneau AK
Description: At 636 AM AKDT, reporting gauges indicated a glacier-dammed lake
outburst along the Mendenhall Lake and River will continue. The
added water from the glacier-dammed lake into the river system will
result in continued flooding.
For the Mendenhall Lake:
At 636 AM AKDT the stage was 7.3 feet.
Flood stage is 9.0 feet.
Forecast: Cresting around 10.2 feet Friday evening. Inherent
uncertainty in initial glacial lake volume will result in varying
crest height and timing.
Impacts: At 9.09 feet water covers Skaters Cabin Road between
Skaters Cabin and the West Glacier Trailhead and flows into the
Mendenhall Campground. At 9.4 feet there will be minor flooding of
yards along View Drive. At 10 feet Mendenhall Campground will have
up to 3 feet of water covering low areas and 1.5 feet of water will
be over Skaters Cabin Road.
If you live near or along the Mendenhall Lake and River stay alert
and be prepared to take action.
The cold water temperatures can increase the threat of hypothermia
and lower the time required to cause hypothermia.
Instruction: Stay away or be swept away. River banks and culverts can become
unstable and unsafe.
A Flood Warning means that flooding is imminent or occurring. All
interested parties should take necessary precautions immediately.
